The Maria Watt Birmingham Foundation
for Childhood & Teenage Leukaemia

The Maria Watt Birmingham Foundation for Childhood & Teenage Leukaemia is a small, family run charity dedicated to improving the lives of children and teenagers diagnosed with Leukaemia and Other Cancers. Our main aim is to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of Leukaemia particularly amongst teenagers and young adults in the hope that earlier diagnosis will lead to earlier treatment and better prognosis for the future.

We are in the process of funding one room within a specialist Teenage Cancer Trust Unit. Teenagers, by their nature have very different needs to children and older adults. Leukaemia is the biggest killer of children and teenagers in the UK and the incidence of this illness is increasing. It is proven that teenagers treated within a Teenage Cancer Trust unit have a 15% better chance of survival. Current survival rates amongst this age group are only 20-30%.

We have funded a number of small research projects however our main campaign centres around raising funds for a new research project into the causes of Leukaemia in Teenagers and Young Adults. If we can find out what is causing this then maybe it can be eradicated in the future.
