| Footsteps
International - a charity set up to help those who are in real need.
We are currently supporting several projects in Kenya
- ‘Tumaini’
an orphanage and education project in Mombasa
- Sunshine
Home for Street Kids in Naivasha
- NATETI -
a training centre for teenagers in Naivasha
- Bombolulu
- wheelchairs for disabled people of any age
Here’s why we
are supporting these projects.
The impact of
AIDS is devastating – the illness leads to poverty which spills
over into joblessness and exploitation, conditions ideal for further
spread of this awful disease. There are thought to be over a million
children in Kenya orphaned by AIDS. Many are cared for by wider
family networks, but these families are often poor and already stretched
to breaking point. Those less fortunate end up on the street, to
cope as best they can. ‘Footsteps’ helps some of the children by
providing a home and an education through the Tumaini and Sunshine
Home projects.
Young people
who can’t afford secondary school fees often leave school with no
qualifications and no chance of a job. Naivasha Technical Training
Institute (NATETI) provides 100 young people a year with a mixture
of craft and business skills. Footsteps supports 40 of these young
people each year.
People born
with physical handicaps, or disabled later in life by disease or
injury have no means of getting around. In Africa, there is no free
health service, and many disabled people simply have to stay at
home, immobile and a burden on their families. In partnership with
APDK Bombolulu, ‘Footsteps’ provides wheelchairs to help the disabled.
